Business Goals
Increase app usage and reduce frustration by improving navigation clarity and feature visibility.
Increased Discovery
Increase feature discoverability to drive higher adoption of workouts, challenges, and events.
Strengthen Engagement
Increase engagement with core product features.
Boost User Satisfaction
Deliver a seamless experience from entry to workout completion.
Research
Identifying friction points that drive users to different fitness products.
User Interviews
Result: Desire for diversity combined with frustration when changing programs leads to disengagement.
I like to do different kinds of workouts in the same week, but it's tedious to change from one program to the other. It's frustrating; I just want to get started.
Doing the same workout all the time gets boring. I like to switch it up.
Benchmarking
Result: Industry leaders anchor the experience with a dashboard.
If I could ask for one change, it would be to see everything at one glance. The workouts, my stats, my nutrition.
Journey Mapping
Result: High motivation meets high friction, causing frustration. Users want to work out, but it's difficult to find the type of workout they want.

Problem
Navigation is frustrating and time-consuming as users switch between programs, locate key features, and find events.
Gaps in Awareness
Lack of information leaves users unaware of key events.
Friction in Key Actions
Flawed UX caused frustration when users want to do more than one program.
Lack of Visibility
Key features and stats are not easily viewed at a glance.

Process
Building systems for speed and scale
Flexibility
Worked with engineering to identify and address time, tech, and user constraints.
Scalability
Designed a flexible system to support new dashboard features.
Launch Success
Usability testing, usability QA, and C-suite approval
Solution
A new dashboard for easy navigation and increased visibility of key features and events.
Improved user flow for starting a new program
To reduce user frustration, I introduced a “My Programs” section to the dashboard. There, users can add the programs they are interested in and easily swipe between them.
IMPACT: Removed friction and user frustration when doing more than one program, reducing steps by 50%.

Users expressed excitement and happiness

Improved Visibility
Users often express surprise when a fitness challenge starts, not having been previously aware of the upcoming event. I added a challenge card to the dashboard.

IMPACT: Improved user knowledge about what the product offers, increasing challenge participation by 3x.
Everything in One Place
I included easy access to workout history, stats, achievements, and other activities.
IMPACT: Providing a way to easily log activities completed outside the app increased app usage by 17%.
Reflections
User research uncovers hidden needs.
What seems obvious from a design or business perspective may not align with user behavior. Direct conversations with users are crucial to uncovering product gaps.
Centralized experiences can drive engagement.
Simplifying access to key features and surfacing relevant information in a clear, structured way can drive higher adoption and user satisfaction.
Cross-functional teamwork streamlines execution.
A tight feedback loop between design and development minimizes miscommunication, convers constraints, speeds up iteration, and results in a more polished end product.
